Auto-entrepreneur bank accounts in Morocco: merchant duty and practical separation

Separate the merchant rule from other activities, then isolate flows so collections can be reconciled without an inaccurate universal claim.

There is no single yes for every activity. Article 18 of Morocco’s Commercial Code requires merchants to open an account with a bank or Barid Al-Maghrib for their trade. Auto-entrepreneur law waives the Article 19 accounting requirement, not that rule. A non-merchant service provider needs activity-specific analysis, although clean separation remains highly useful.

Four decision questions

  • Does the activity make the individual a merchant?
  • Does the offered account permit the genuine business use?
  • Will cash, card, transfer and platform receipts all reconcile?
  • Are fees, withdrawals, limits and evidence suitable?
  • Would a dedicated separation improve filings and controls?
  • Have the bank’s current terms been read?

1. Classify before generalising

Auto-entrepreneur is a tax and administrative label; the bank duty cited here turns on merchant status.

Mixed activityobtain confirmation

A bank product labelled “auto-entrepreneur” may make onboarding easier, but its name does not determine the law.

2. Select for real flows

Compare an account with an actual working week, not merely its opening fee.

  • Collection: transfers, card acquiring, links or cash deposits
  • Payment: supplier transfers, card and withdrawals
  • Evidence: exportable statements and legible references
  • Access: app, branch, delegation and recovery
  • Cost: maintenance, operation, card, incident and exchange
  • Growth: future move to a company

Read current price and acceptable-use terms from several institutions.

3. Install separation

A dedicated account does not replace a log, but removes needless explanations.

  1. Direct clients to the announced channel.
  2. Deposit cash with retained slips.
  3. Pay business purchases from the dedicated flow.
  4. Label every personal contribution or withdrawal.
  5. Reconcile statements and operations weekly.
  6. Retain statements outside the banking app.

Do not turn a transfer between your accounts into turnover.

Do not confuse privacy with opacity

Using one personal account for everything makes income, contributions and spending harder to explain. Even where a precise duty needs confirmation, clean separation protects the business.

4. Reconcile without confusion

A payment provider may remit an amount net of commission and combine sales. Reconcile gross transactions first, then fees and the settlement.

BelloPOS can separate cash, card and other methods in recorded transactions, and since version 3.0 it imports the bank statement, reconciles it and letters the lines on the Pro plan. Bank and provider evidence remain the external controls; the software neither opens an account nor classifies the activity.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Claiming every auto-entrepreneur has exactly the same duty.
  • Assuming accounting relief erases Article 18.
  • Choosing only on monthly price.
  • Declaring internal transfers.
  • Comparing net settlement with gross sales.
  • Failing to export statements.

Frequently asked questions

Is an account mandatory for a merchant auto-entrepreneur?

The Commercial Code requires merchants to have an account for their trade; auto-entrepreneur law only waives Article 19 accounting.

What about a service provider?

It depends on classification and applicable rules. Confirm the case; dedicated separation remains prudent.

Must it be branded a business account?

Choose a product whose contract allows the real use and provides the services needed, rather than relying on a label.

How should a personal transfer be treated?

Label it as a contribution or withdrawal, not a sale or expense, and retain its trail.

Does BelloPOS replace the statement?

No. It provides an operating record to reconcile against banks and providers.

What to take away

Classify the activity first; then choose an account allowing real flows and make every sale, fee, contribution and withdrawal explainable.
