A tax add-back does not erase the accounting entry; it adjusts taxable profit. The useful question is not only ‘deductible or not?’ but ‘for what reason, what fraction and for how long?’ That distinction stops a timing difference being treated as permanent wrongdoing.

Separate four families
- Permanent exclusion: never deducted for tax.
- Partial limit: only a fraction is added back.
- Temporary difference: possible deduction in another period.
- Classification error: asset, stock or private account to correct.
- Repairable evidence: complete only through a genuine document.
- Non-recoverable VAT: conclude separately.
1. Article 11’s express exclusions
The CGI excludes fines, penalties and statutory surcharges for legal or regulatory infringements, with the stated nuance for some commercial late-payment compensation. It also excludes unsupported purchases/services, liberalities and listed contributions. Corporate income tax itself is not deductible under Article 10.
| Cost | Initial treatment | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Road/tax fine | add back | exact legal nature |
| Booked corporate tax | add back | do not confuse other taxes |
| Unqualified gift | possible liberality | purpose and recipient |
| Irregular invoice | rejection risk | permitted completion |
| Excluded contribution | add back | text and year |
| B2B late compensation | not automatically a fine | commercial law |
A ledger label saying ‘penalty’ is not precise enough: read the legal source of the amount.
2. Partial limits and timing
Non-traceable payment above thresholds is not the same as a fictitious cost. An asset booked as expense is not inherently lost: it is reclassified and depreciated. A provision may be valid accounting today but deductible only if tax conditions are met.
- Partial: calculate allowed and added-back fractions
- Temporary: maintain a reversal/deduction schedule
- Classification: correct account, asset and depreciation
- Mixed: isolate business and private share
- Documentary: complete the invoice without inventing supply
Show the future reverse movement. Otherwise ‘temporary’ becomes an untracked excuse.
3. Build the add-back schedule
Use one line per adjustment instead of an unexplained year-end total.
| Column | Content |
|---|---|
| Account/evidence | ledger origin |
| Recipient | supplier or person |
| Book amount | controlled base |
| Rule | article and reason |
| Type | permanent, partial, temporary |
| Add-back | current calculation |
| Next | reversal date or action |
Reconcile the total to the tax result and retain the detail.
Do not delete a cost to hide the issue
Accounting should retain the real event. The add-back belongs in the tax bridge; artificial deletion also distorts suppliers, cash and book profit.
4. Correct without rewriting history
Request the original or a traceable duplicate; never manufacture a backdated document. Handle private costs in the proper account. Ask the supplier to correct a wrong buyer name before closing where possible.
- Freeze the opening trial balance.
- List exceptions by account.
- Classify under the 2026 text.
- Calculate exact fraction.
- Approve the adjustment.
- Keep evidence and advice.
- Schedule future reversal.
- Reconcile return and payment.
BelloPOS helps retrieve a recorded sale, return, purchase or payment. It neither produces the tax schedule nor repairs missing evidence.
Mistakes to avoid
- Adding back one unexplained total.
- Mixing permanent and temporary.
- Calling every difference a fine.
- Missing the private share.
- Editing a supplier invoice yourself.
- Never reversing a temporary difference.
Frequently asked questions
What is a tax add-back?
It adds a booked cost that is wholly or partly non-deductible for the period back to taxable profit.
Are fines deductible?
Fines, penalties and statutory surcharges for infringements are excluded, with the legal nuance for certain commercial late-payment compensation.
Is an incomplete invoice permanently lost?
It risks rejection; the CGI permits missing information to be completed in the cited procedure, never a fictitious supply.
Is an asset expensed by mistake permanently non-deductible?
It should be regularised and depreciated under the rules rather than left as an immediate cost.
Does BelloPOS calculate add-backs?
No. Exports help retrieve flows; the schedule belongs to the accountant or tax adviser.
What to take away
A sound tax schedule explains every difference: origin, rule, fraction, calculation, evidence and next action. A total alone proves nothing.
