Working-capital requirement in Morocco: stock, customers and suppliers

Measure cash tied up in the operating cycle, convert it into days and fix the cause rather than targeting an arbitrarily low requirement.

Two shops with the same revenue may need opposite funding: one buys 90 days of stock and sells on credit; the other collects now and pays suppliers after 45 days. WCR measures the financing gap in the cycle, not the size of the business.

The operating formula

  • Operating stock.
  • Plus operating customer receivables.
  • Plus other consistently defined operating needs.
  • Minus operating supplier payables.
  • Minus other consistently defined operating resources.
  • Compare in MAD and days.
  • Reconcile to balance sheet and season.

1. Calculate without mixing operations and finance

Illustration: stock MAD 180,000, customer receivables MAD 120,000, supplier payables MAD 140,000. Simplified WCR = 180,000 + 120,000 − 140,000 = MAD 160,000. Keep bank, borrowing and fixed assets outside this simplified calculation; they explain funding, not the operating need itself.

ItemAmountWCR effect
Stock180,000+
Customers120,000+
Suppliers140,000
Simplified WCR160,000Cash to fund

Use reconciled amounts at one date. Stock at selling price, already-paid receivables or disputed payables distort interpretation.

2. Convert balances to days

Days make periods comparable. Exact formulas depend on chosen denominators: average stock over cost consumed or sold, average customers over corresponding credit sales under the file convention, suppliers over corresponding purchases. Write the convention and keep it stable.

CycleQuestionPossible action
Stock daysHow long until sale/use?Range, ordering, shrinkage
Customer daysHow long until collection?Terms, invoice, reminders
Supplier daysWhen do we really pay?Negotiation, reliability, schedule

Do not compare a stock ratio based on tax-inclusive purchases with another based on tax-exclusive cost. Apparent precision cannot repair inconsistent bases.

3. Understand negative WCR before celebrating

A supermarket collecting immediately and paying later may have negative WCR: operations provide cash. It may be structural and healthy, but relies on rotation, supplier terms and no hidden obsolete stock. A sales fall or shorter supplier credit can reduce that funding.

  1. Compare the same month last year.
  2. Measure dormant stock and shrinkage.
  3. Separate cash and credit sales.
  4. Check customer advances and credits.
  5. Find missing supplier invoices.
  6. Simulate five extra stock days.
  7. Simulate ten fewer supplier days.
  8. Read the impact on the cash low point.

Positive WCR is not automatically bad where profitable growth needs stock or customer credit; it must be funded before acceleration.

The lowest WCR is not always the best

Zero stock creates stockouts, zero customer credit can lose good business and extreme supplier terms weaken the chain. Optimise service, margin and risk together.

4. Shorten the cycle without moving the problem

BelloPOS can detail rotation, stockouts, sales and some customer balances. Combine it with supplier records. Act on cause: stop dormant references, make invoices reliable, request deposits, negotiate schedules or shorten internal receiving time.

  • Stock: forecast, minimum, replenishment, controlled clearance
  • Customers: identity, proof, due date, collection
  • Suppliers: realistic terms and durable relationship
  • Process: fast receiving and approval
  • Growth: budget marginal WCR

Delaying every supplier may improve this week’s number and break supply. A good plan removes wasted days and negotiates; it does not hide default.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Valuing stock at selling price.
  • Mixing dates.
  • Including loans.
  • Changing formulas monthly.
  • Celebrating unexplained negative WCR.
  • Delaying suppliers without agreement.

Frequently asked questions

What simple formula should I use?

Operating stock plus operating receivables minus operating payables, including other consistent operating items in scope.

Is negative WCR good?

It can be structural in cash retail, but verify stock, rotation, suppliers, season and sustainability.

Why calculate in days?

To separate nominal growth from cycle drift and compare periods or sites of different sizes.

How can a WCR increase be financed?

Use durable margin, suitable debt, negotiated supplier credit or equity depending on amount, duration and risk.

Does BelloPOS calculate all WCR?

It can supply stock, sales and payments; the balance sheet, suppliers and other items complete the calculation.

What to take away

WCR shows how much cash the cycle absorbs or supplies; good management changes the days and funds growth before cash runs out.
