A business plan is neither a design contest nor a promise made to the bank. It is a chain of evidence: a customer you have observed, an offer you can deliver, a margin you have calculated, a team that is capable and enough cash to execute. Write it to decide first, then adapt the document to the funder.

The ten pages that matter
- A summary stating the need and the decision requested.
- The problem and the customer, precisely.
- A market study with its sources.
- The offer, the price and the evidence it was tested.
- Customer acquisition and selling.
- Production, suppliers and premises.
- The team and the governance.
- The legal framework and the permits.
- A forecast in three scenarios.
- Funding, risks and milestones.
1. Link every story to a number
If you claim offices in Casablanca as your market, the revenue has to come from the number of prospects you can reach, the conversion rate, the frequency and the basket — not from a round growth rate.
| Statement | Evidence | Linked figure |
|---|---|---|
| The need exists | Interviews and field tests | Active customers |
| The price works | A paid test | Basket |
| We can deliver | Capacity and quotes | Maximum volume |
| The model earns | Landed cost | Unit margin |
2. Write in the right order
The summary is written last.
- Gather the study, the quotes, the contracts and the assumptions.
- Describe one real sale from start to finish.
- Calculate the unit economics and the capacity.
- Build the sales plan and the operating plan.
- Align profit, cash and funding so they agree.
- Stress lower sales, a delayed opening and a cost increase.
- Write down the risks and the action for each.
- Summarise the decision you need on a single page.
The founder’s guide hosted by Maroc PME covers legal, technical, commercial and financial feasibility; keep all four angles visible in your own document.
3. An example of coherence
For a small grocery, a simple table reveals more than a long piece of text.
| Assumption | Base | Stress test |
|---|---|---|
| Tickets per day | Counting and catchment area | -20% |
| Average basket | Field evidence | -10% |
| Margin | Supplier cost | +5% cost |
| Stock | Target rotation | 15-day delay |
If the stress test breaks the cash position in month two, the plan itself has to change: less fitting-out, a narrower range, a larger contribution or a later opening.
Never present an assumption as a fact
Date the source, name the person who owns the assumption and state the scenario. A funder prefers a conservative assumption that is explained to a precise curve that was invented.
4. Adapt it to Morocco and to the reader
A bank file, a regional competition and a partners’ agreement are not read the same way. Keep one central model and add the documents the organisation asks for at the moment you submit.
- Bank: repayment, security, contribution and cash
- Partner: rights, exit, role and return
- Regional body or incubator: impact, jobs, innovation and milestones
- Founder: weekly priorities and stop thresholds
Maroc PME presents support schemes, including NAWAT for certain profiles. Check the current eligibility and terms rather than writing a subsidy into the plan as if it were already granted.
5. Replace the plan with the results
From the day you open, close each month with four columns: planned, actual, variance and action.
- Sales by channel and by family.
- Basket, margin and discount.
- Stock, losses and rotation.
- Cash position and overdue customers.
BelloPOS reports can feed the sales and stock sections, and since version 3.0 they keep the accounts and the financial statements on the Pro plan. They do not replace the bank, but they stop you managing the plan from memory.
Mistakes to avoid
- Writing the summary first.
- Projecting a percentage with no driver behind it.
- Leaving cash out of the model.
- Counting a subsidy that has not been awarded.
- Hiding the risks.
- Never comparing the plan with the actuals.
Frequently asked questions
How long should it be?
As short as it can be while still demonstrating the project; often 15 to 30 pages plus appendices, but the quality of the evidence matters more.
Does it need three years?
Three years give a trajectory, with a first year detailed month by month.
Can I use a template?
Yes for the structure, never for the assumptions.
Who validates the taxes?
A Moroccan professional, working from the legal form and the real operations.
When should it be updated?
Monthly in the first year, and before any major decision.
What to take away
A business plan earns its value through its links: customer to sale, sale to margin, margin to cash, cash to funding. The document becomes useful the moment a variance triggers an action.
