Opening a business bank account in Morocco: the documents to prepare

The file is rarely refused on the merits. It drags because one document is missing, then another, across three trips.

Opening a business account is not difficult; it is slow when the file is incomplete. Banks ask for much the same families of documents, and the delay almost always comes from the same oversights: an expired identity document, an uncertified copy, an address that does not match the one on the register.

The essentials in five points

  • Four families of documents: the company’s existence, its tax identification, its directors, its address.
  • The exact list varies by bank: ask for it in writing before making the trip.
  • Consistency matters as much as presence: the same name and address on every document.
  • Signing powers must be clear: who signs, alone or jointly, and above what amount.
  • The account is kept separate from the outset, or the confusion sets in within the first month.

1. The four families of documents

Whatever the bank, the file answers four questions. The documents requested vary in detail, but rarely in purpose.

The bank’s questionWhat answers itThe common trap
Does the company exist?Commercial register entry, articles for a companyAn extract too old to be accepted
How is it identified?Tax identifiers and the common company identifierA number obtained but never collected in writing
Who runs and binds it?Identity documents, appointment deed, specimen signatureAn identity document expired on the day of the appointment
Where is it established?Proof of address or a domiciliation contractAn address different from the registered one

The last line holds up more files than all the others. A company registered at one address with proof of address in another name creates an inconsistency the branch cannot resolve itself, and the file waits while the position is regularised elsewhere.

2. What changes with the legal form

A company’s file is not a sole trader’s. The difference concerns what proves existence and what proves authority.

  • A sole trader: Existence is proved by the register entry and the tax identification; authority does not arise, since the account holder is the person themselves.
  • A company: The articles and the deed appointing the director are needed on top. That deed is what allows the bank to let someone bind the company.
  • A company being formed: Some banks open an account to receive the capital contributions before registration, under a specific regime. Ask for it explicitly if you need it.
  • A non-resident shareholder or director: Expect additional documents and a longer timeline; this is the case where anticipating changes the schedule most.

The third case is worth raising at first contact. If your formation requires contributions to be deposited, the order of steps is different, and discovering that afterwards costs weeks.

3. Settling the question of signing powers

This is the part of the file filled in quickly and regretted later. It determines who can do what, every day, for years.

  1. Name who holds signing authority on the account, individually.
  2. Decide whether signatures are separate or joint, and above what amount.
  3. Provide for the director’s absence: with no deputy, everything stops during holidays.
  4. Set the access rights to online tools, which do not automatically follow signing powers.
  5. Note the procedure for changing them: it matters on the day someone leaves.
  6. Keep a copy of the powers filed, with their date.

The third line is discovered at the wrong moment. A single signature with no deputy looks simple until the first extended absence, when no payment can go out at all.

Inconsistency between documents holds things up more than absence

A missing document can be supplied; a contradiction has to be corrected at source, which means elsewhere and far more slowly. An address on the register that does not match the proof provided, a company name spelled differently from one document to the next, a director appointed by a deed the articles do not reflect: in those cases the bank cannot decide and should not. Re-read the file looking for discrepancies between documents, not just for empty boxes.

4. Preparing the file in one go

The only real lever on the timeline is avoiding return trips. Five checks are enough to remove them.

  1. Ask your branch for the written list of documents before assembling the file.
  2. Check the validity date of every document, identity papers especially.
  3. Verify that the name and address are identical across all documents.
  4. Prepare certified copies where they are required, rather than discovering it at the counter.
  5. Bring the originals as well as the copies, even if you were not asked to.
  6. Note the name of your contact: a file is followed by a person, not by a branch.

The third line deserves a careful re-read. “SARL Untel” and “Untel SARL” are not the same name to a compliance department, and a difference of that kind is enough to send the file back.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Making the trip without having asked for the written list of documents.
  • Presenting a register extract that is too old.
  • Letting an identity document expire while the file is being processed.
  • Providing proof of an address different from the registered one.
  • Setting up a single signature with no deputy provided for.
  • Using the business account for personal spending from the first month.

Frequently asked questions

Which documents should be prepared?

Four families: the company’s existence, its tax identification, the identity and powers of its directors, and its address. The precise list varies by bank: ask for it in writing before assembling the file.

Can an account be opened before registration?

Some banks open an account to receive the contributions of a company being formed, under a specific regime. Raise it at first contact if your formation depends on it.

Why is my file taking so long?

Usually because of an inconsistency between documents rather than a refusal on the merits: an address differing from the register, a company name spelled differently, an expired document.

Should there be more than one signatory?

It is strongly advisable. A single signature with no deputy freezes all payments from the director’s first extended absence. Decide too whether signatures are joint above a certain amount.

Does BelloPOS connect to my bank?

BelloPOS opens no direct banking connection. Since version 3.0, the Pro plan imports the bank statement, reconciles it and matches the lines; the statement itself still comes from your bank.

What to take away

A business account is prepared like any ordinary administrative file: ask for the written list, check the dates, and above all re-read looking for inconsistencies between documents. Settle the signing powers and the deputy at opening, and use the account for the business only from day one.

Separate the flows from the first payment received

BelloPOS records sales and collections by payment method from the free Lite licence onward; the Pro plan imports and reconciles the bank statement from version 3.0.
