Gross to net salary in Morocco: the calculation step by step

Five operations separate gross from net, and they do not apply in any order. Change one and everything after it is wrong.

An employee asks why their net pay fell when their gross did not move. The answer nearly always lies in the order of operations: five steps separate gross from net, each calculated on the result of the one before, and two of them are capped. One inversion and the net lands wide of the mark.

The essentials in five points

  • CNSS is not calculated on the whole gross: its capped share stops at 6,000 dirhams a month.
  • AMO, by contrast, is uncapped and follows the gross whatever it is.
  • Professional expenses run in two bands, 35% then 25%, not a single rate.
  • Income tax uses the scale’s quick deduction, without which the result is simply wrong.
  • Family relief comes off the tax, not off the taxable base.

1. The five steps, in order

The order is not a presentational convention: each step takes the previous result as its base. That is why applying a rate at the wrong moment produces a gap that repeats every month.

  1. Start from taxable gross, benefits in kind included.
  2. Deduct employee contributions: the capped CNSS share and uncapped AMO.
  3. Deduct professional expenses, calculated on the gross in two bands and capped overall.
  4. Apply the income tax scale to the resulting taxable net, subtracting the band’s quick deduction.
  5. Finally deduct family relief from the tax itself, not from the base.

The last step is the one most often inverted. Family relief is a tax reduction: it comes off the tax calculated, not off the income used to calculate it. Treating it as an allowance inflates the net artificially.

2. The rates to apply

The rates below are those in force for 2026. They change with each finance act: have your accountant confirm them before the first payroll run, and check them again in January.

DeductionRateCeiling
CNSS, social benefits
4.48%
6,000 MAD a month

Two traps hide in that table. The first is the CNSS ceiling: on a gross of 10,000 dirhams, the capped share is calculated on 6,000, not 10,000, while AMO is calculated on the whole. The second is the two-band professional expense relief, which since 2023 has replaced the single 35% rate capped at 2,500 dirhams. That single rate still circulates: it is obsolete.

3. The tax scale and the quick deduction

The scale is progressive, but in practice you do not compute band by band. You apply the rate of the band reached, then subtract a fixed sum that corrects the whole. Without that subtraction the tax is very substantially overstated.

Monthly taxable netRateQuick deduction
up to 3,333.33 MAD
0%

Annualised, those bands correspond to 40,000, 60,000, 80,000, 100,000 and 180,000 dirhams. Family relief is 600 dirhams per dependent per year, that is 50 dirhams a month, for up to six dependents — 3,600 dirhams a year, or 300 a month.

Take care with older references: that amount was 500 dirhams per dependent until 2025, capped at 3,000. It was raised on 1 January 2026.

The single 35% rate capped at 2,500 dirhams is obsolete

That is the pre-2023 rule, and it still circulates in payslip templates and spreadsheets copied forward year after year. Professional expenses are now calculated in two bands, 35% up to 6,500 dirhams a month then 25% above, the whole capped at 2,916.67 dirhams a month. An inherited spreadsheet applies the old rule silently and distorts every payslip.

4. A worked example, and what BelloPOS does

Take a taxable gross of 8,000 dirhams with no dependents. The capped CNSS share applies to 6,000 dirhams and gives 268.80; AMO applies to 8,000 and gives 180.80, so 449.60 in contributions. Professional expenses are calculated on the gross, not on what remains after contributions: 35% of the first 6,500 dirhams plus 25% of the next 1,500, that is 2,275 plus 375, so 2,650 — below the 2,916.67 cap. Taxable net is 8,000 less 449.60 less 2,650, or 4,900.40, in the 10% band: the tax is 10% of 4,900.40 less 333.33, or 156.71. Net pay approaches 7,394 dirhams.

BelloPOS Pro calculates payroll and issues payslips, with editable rates and scale, precisely because they change with each finance act. The software applies the steps in the right order, which removes the commonest source of error; it does not relieve you of having the setup validated by your accountant before the first run.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Calculating the capped CNSS share on the whole gross instead of stopping at 6,000 dirhams.
  • Capping AMO as if it were CNSS, when it follows the gross with no limit.
  • Forgetting to subtract the scale’s quick deduction, which greatly overstates the tax.
  • Deducting family relief from the taxable base instead of from the tax itself.
  • Reusing an old spreadsheet without checking the rates, which change with each finance act.

Frequently asked questions

Do benefits in kind enter the calculation?

Yes, they are added to taxable gross for both tax and contributions. They are, however, excluded from the base for professional expense relief.

Does the 6,000-dirham ceiling cover all of CNSS?

It covers the share funding social benefits, 4.48% on the employee side. AMO, at 2.26%, is uncapped and calculated on the entire gross.

Why does my figure differ from my accountant’s?

Usually because something changes the base: a non-contributory bonus, a benefit in kind, or the order of the steps. Compare line by line rather than only the final net.

Do these rates hold all year?

They hold until the next finance act. Rates and the scale are revised regularly, which means rechecking the setup at the start of each year.

What to take away

From gross to net, five steps in an order that cannot be permuted: contributions first, of which only the CNSS share is capped at 6,000 dirhams, then two-band professional expenses, then the scale with its quick deduction, and finally family relief taken off the tax. Have the rates confirmed every January.
