Square is an excellent point-of-sale system in countries where its payments and hardware are supported. But Square’s own support page currently limits card processing to eight countries, and Morocco is not one of them. A Moroccan merchant therefore needs a till that works locally and a Moroccan route for accepting cards. The right replacement depends on the original need: free software, stock, restaurant operations, online selling, offline continuity or repairable hardware. A separate bank terminal does not recreate Square’s integrated experience, and this guide does not pretend otherwise.

1. Replace the job you wanted done, not only the logo
Our free Square, Shopify POS Lite and BelloPOS comparison already explains their business models. This page starts elsewhere: what did you expect Square to do? That answer prevents you buying a local till and then discovering that the actual need was ecommerce or integrated payments.

The payment row matters most. In Morocco, the till may record card as the payment type while a bank terminal actually authorises the transaction. 2. What Square does better, and why you should stop seeking one local block
In a supported country, Square connects the app, merchant account, payment, receipts and certified hardware. That coherence is a genuine advantage. Its official page also says hardware is approved country by country and processing outside the eight listed countries is unsupported. Importing a reader changes neither account eligibility nor where you are permitted to take payments.
- Payments: A local terminal can accept the card, but it does not automatically share basket, receipt, refund and reconciliation with your till.
- Hardware: A standard PC and peripherals are easier to replace in Morocco, but less integrated than hardware designed alongside the software.
- Stock: BelloPOS tracks local stock, receipts and sales. For a catalogue shared with a site, choose a product designed to synchronise channels.
- Data: A local database continues without internet. A cloud suite makes remote management easier. They are different advantages, not a universal winner.
- Support: A local supplier may work in your language and time zone. Still require written response times, exports and a backup procedure.

3. Choose with six tests
Run each test with your products and hardware. A tick in a brochure does not prove that a counter workflow works.
- Write why you are leaving Square. One sentence: integrated payment, free software, stock, restaurant, ecommerce or hardware.
- Make a sale with every payment method. Cash, card, mixed payment, void and refund. Record every amount retyped by hand.
- Disconnect the internet. Sell, print, close and reopen. Our offline versus cloud POS guide details this test.
- Scan and count twenty items. Check variants, alerts, stock take, supplier receipt and export, not only the catalogue.
- Simulate hardware failure. Ask who replaces screen, printer and card terminal, how fast and with what loan unit.
- Export before buying. Products, customers, sales and stock in files you can open. Exit cost belongs to entry cost.
Add one trade-specific test. A restaurant splits a bill and sends one line back to the kitchen. A retailer returns an online order in store. A grocer counts an item sold singly and received by the case. The best replacement passes your difficult case without hidden re-entry.
An unconnected card terminal is not Square
With a separate terminal, the seller reads the till total, retypes it on the terminal, waits for approval and then confirms card in the software. This works and remains common, but basket, payment and refund are not one object. Measure amount errors, retain the terminal receipt and reconcile the card total against the till report at close.
4. Which option fits your business?
Choose BelloPOS Lite when you first need a free Windows till that sells, prints, scans and tracks stock without internet. Move to Go for purchasing and management functions, or Pro for tables, kitchen and several local stations. Do not choose it for integrated card processing, a synchronised online shop, a cloud dashboard or an app ecosystem: BelloPOS does not replace those parts of Square.

For a shop already built on Shopify, Shopify POS keeps a real advantage: online and in-store products, orders and stock share one back office. Shopify says its POS app can be used in nearly every country, but integrated payments and hardware cover selected regions only. The current Shopify Payments list does not include Morocco, so verify the web gateway and store terminal separately.
- Choose local and offline: when counter continuity, Windows and replaceable parts matter more than remote management.
- Choose a cloud suite: when locations, a website, remote orders and a central view are the actual project.
- Keep Square as a benchmark: for judging payment fluidity, without buying an account or hardware unsupported in Morocco.
5. The quotation that enables a real comparison
Do not compare the word free with a subscription or licence until the scope matches. Ask for three-year cost, but above all record who supplies every component and who answers when two suppliers blame one another for a failure.

Mistakes to avoid
- Opening Square with a false address. The official page requires presence in the activation country to process payments.
- Importing a Square reader. Hardware is approved for its intended country and importing it does not unlock Moroccan processing.
- Calling a separate terminal an integration. Ask to see basket, amount, void, refund and reconciliation.
- Choosing BelloPOS for ecommerce. It is a local Windows till, not omnichannel stock or an ERP.
- Comparing only the first invoice. Add hardware, gateway, support, migration and exit cost.
