A price advertised in dollars tells you almost nothing about what an international till really costs in Morocco. You have to convert it, multiply by sixty months, then add four items the pricing page never mentions. Here is the full sum, worked out from prices recorded on 27 July 2026.

The short answer
- Shopify Basic is advertised from $39 a month, and POS Pro is added at $89 a month per retail location.
- That is about 14,400 MAD in year one and 72,000 MAD over five years for a single store, at the rate of 27 July 2026.
- Square’s amounts are not readable in their pricing page’s code. We will therefore not quote them.
- Four costs are always added: international card and exchange fees, customs and shipping on hardware, an invoice issued abroad, and support outside your time zone and language.
- BelloPOS Pro, all in, is 40,000 MAD paid once, close to half the Shopify figure over five years, with no renewal.
The solutions compared
Two leading international platforms against a local program. The comparison is not about quality, which is real on both sides, but about what each model actually costs a business based in Morocco.
Shopify POS
Shopify’s till, in two tiers: POS Lite, included with any Shopify subscription, and POS Pro, an add-on billed per retail location. Its reason to exist is to make online stock and in-store stock one single stock.
Square Point of Sale
Square’s till (Block, Inc.), very widespread in North America and a few European countries. The base software is free because the company earns from processing card payments. Its pricing page now shows a single ladder: Basic, Plus, Premium and Square Pro on request.
BelloPOS
Our Windows till software, built in Morocco. It runs 100% offline: no sale depends on the connection. The interface and the receipts exist in French, Arabic and English. Three tiers: Lite free for life, Go and Pro bought once, never subscribed to.
The comparison, criterion by criterion
The cost criteria, in the order they appear on a bank statement.
| The criterion | Shopify POS | Square Point of Sale | BelloPOS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Advertised price | Basic from $39/month, Grow $105, Advanced $399, Plus from $2,300 on a 3-year term. POS Pro: + $89/month per location. | Basic, Plus, Premium, Square Pro ladder. Amounts not readable in the page’s code. | Lite free, Go 9,000 MAD, Pro 40,000 MAD, once. |
| Billing currency | Dollar, so international card and exchange fees every month. | Dollar, same point. | Dirham, with no exchange fees. |
| 5-year cost, one store | About 72,000 MAD with POS Pro. | Not calculable: amounts not published in the page’s code. | 40,000 MAD at most, paid once. |
| Second location | + $89/month, about 10,000 MAD more a year. | Per their grid, not verifiable here. | Networked terminals included in Pro. |
| Hardware | Imported, with shipping, customs and import VAT. Readers unusable without Shopify Payments. | Imported, readers tied to the Square service. | Standard, bought from a Moroccan reseller. |
| Card acceptance in Morocco | No. | No. | Through your bank’s terminal. |
| Invoice for your accounts | Issued abroad. | Issued abroad. | Issued in Morocco. |
| Support | International, another time zone, mainly in English. | International. | Darija, French, Arabic, in Moroccan business hours. |
| What you get in exchange | A leading e-commerce ecosystem, if you already sell online with them. | An excellent payment experience, where the service exists. | A trilingual offline till, with a cost that stops. |
What it really costs over five years
The table below converts the public prices into dirhams and projects them. It contains none of the four hidden costs described below, which come on top.
| The solution | Over 1 year | Over 3 years | Over 5 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Basic alone ($39/month), POS Lite included | 4,399 MAD | 13,198 MAD | 21,996 MAD |
| Shopify Basic + POS Pro ($39 + $89/month per location) | 14,438 MAD | 43,315 MAD | 72,192 MAD |
| BelloPOS Go (9,000 MAD, once) | 9,000 MAD | 9,000 MAD | 9,000 MAD |
| BelloPOS Pro (40,000 MAD, once) | 40,000 MAD | 40,000 MAD | 40,000 MAD |
| Moroccan reference: Caisse Manager, till only (250 MAD/month) | 3,000 MAD | 9,000 MAD | 15,000 MAD |
The amounts above are worked out from the public prices recorded on 27 July 2026, with VAT added where a price is quoted excluding tax, and with no commercial discount. For prices in dollars, the rate used: 1 USD = 9.4 MAD, recorded 27 July 2026. Redo the sum with the day’s prices before you decide: they move, and it is your money.
Note the second line: about 72,000 MAD over five years for a single location, against 40,000 MAD paid once for our most complete tier. And that figure is a floor, since it ignores exchange costs, customs on hardware and international card fees.
The four costs the pricing page does not show
The advertised price is never the real cost of a foreign tool in Morocco, and four items are almost always added to it. One: the subscription is paid by international card, with your bank’s fees and exchange rate, every month. Two: the hardware is imported, so shipping, customs duty and import VAT, plus a delay when something breaks. Three: the subscription invoice is issued abroad, which complicates its local accounting treatment. Four: support answers in another time zone and another language, which is paid for in time when a till locks up on a Saturday night.
They deserve costing, even roughly, because together they change the conclusion. International card and exchange fees generally run around 2 to 3% of the amount, every month for five years. Imported hardware carries shipping, duty and import VAT, and above all a replacement delay of several weeks when something breaks, which for a till is the real cost. Add the time spent getting your accountant to accept a foreign invoice, and the time difference on support.

The point that makes all this arithmetic secondary
Neither Shopify Payments nor Square processes card payments in Morocco. Shopify lists 46 countries and regions for Shopify Payments, Morocco is not among them, and Shopify’s card readers depend on that service. Square, for its part, writes that card acceptance is available “in the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, France and Spain” and that it does not support payment processing outside those countries. In practice you can use these tills as a catalogue and a stock tracker, take cash and go through a separate bank terminal, but the brand’s own payment hardware will not work in your shop (checked 27 July 2026).
In other words: even if the prices suited you, you would be buying a till missing the function these two products are known for. That is why this comparison concludes so quickly: price is not the main problem, it is only the second one.
On Square’s pricing
A note on Square’s prices, because we will not quote a figure we have not verified. Their pricing page now shows a single ladder, Basic, Plus, Premium and Square Pro, the last on request. The amounts themselves are computed by the browser and do not appear in the page’s code: we could not record them on 27 July 2026. Figures circulate in third-party articles; we will not repeat them. Check their page directly, the link is at the end of this article. In any case, the question of price comes after the question of availability, and that is the next point.
How to choose: the twenty-minute method
The general method, with the checks specific to buying in a foreign currency.
- Count your real needs before you look at a single price. How many tills, how many users, do you invoice businesses, do you need stock, do you take delivery orders. Five answers, and half the offers rule themselves out. Our guide to choosing a till works through this questionnaire.
- Test the checkout, not the demo. Ask to ring up ten items, one return and one split payment, yourself, and time it. A well-rehearsed demo tells you nothing about what your cashier will face on a Saturday.
- Pull the internet cable and try to sell. That one test splits the whole market in two, and it takes thirty seconds. We go through it in detail in our offline or cloud POS comparison.
- Ask for an export of your own data before you pay anything. Products, customers, sales, in a file you can open. If the answer is vague, you already know how this ends.
- Add up five years, not one month. A subscription is compared with a one-off purchase over the time you will actually use it.
- Check that the receipt prints correctly in Arabic before you commit. On a thermal printer that is not a given, and it takes a minute to see.
- Ask who answers the phone on a Saturday at 8pm, and in which language. That is exactly when a till breaks.
- Convert, then multiply by sixty before comparing with a one-off purchase in dirhams.
- Ask your bank the real cost of a monthly dollar debit, fees and exchange included.
- Cost the customs and shipping on the hardware before approving a foreign quote.
What each solution does better
Shopify POS
Single stock between the online shop and the store. That is a real advantage and it deserves saying plainly: if you already sell on Shopify, a sale at the counter decrements the website’s stock within the second, and the reverse too. Catalogue, customers, orders and reports sit in one place. No assembly of two tools does that as cleanly as a product designed as one, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Square Point of Sale
The payment experience and the hardware, where the service exists. Square probably has the most polished card checkout on the market: a reader that pairs itself, a payment in two seconds, a receipt sent by text, readable fees and no contract. The software is free and genuinely complete. It is an excellent product, and its business model is precisely the reason it does not cover Morocco.
Mistakes to avoid
- Comparing $39 a month with 9,000 MAD. Convert and project, or the comparison means nothing.
- Forgetting POS Pro is billed per location. Two stores double that line.
- Ignoring exchange rate risk. A dollar price can rise in dirhams without the publisher changing anything.
- Buying the brand’s hardware before checking country coverage. The readers depend on the payment service.
- Not counting the replacement delay on imported hardware. A till out of action for three weeks costs more than the till.
Frequently asked questions
What does Shopify POS Pro cost?
$89 a month per retail location, on top of a Shopify subscription starting at $39 a month for the Basic tier. Together that is about 14,400 MAD a year for one store, at the rate of 27 July 2026.
What are Shopify’s prices in 2026?
According to their pricing page on 27 July 2026: Basic from $39 a month, Grow at $105, Advanced at $399 and Plus from $2,300 a month on a three-year term. POS Lite is included with all of them, POS Pro is an add-on.
What does Square cost?
We cannot say with certainty. Their pricing page shows the Basic, Plus, Premium and Square Pro tiers, but the amounts are computed browser-side and do not appear in the page’s code. We would rather write that than repeat unverified figures.
Why does a foreign till cost more than advertised in Morocco?
Four items are added: international card and exchange fees on every debit, shipping and customs on hardware, the accounting complexity of an invoice issued abroad, and the cost in time of support located in another time zone and another language.
From what point is a one-off purchase better value?
Against Shopify Basic plus POS Pro at about 14,400 MAD a year, BelloPOS Pro at 40,000 MAD becomes cheaper from year three, and BelloPOS Go at 9,000 MAD from year one.
Are these tills worth their price anyway?
For a business already selling online on Shopify and operating in a country covered by Shopify Payments, yes, very clearly. For a Moroccan business selling over a counter, the ratio between the price and what you can actually use here is not favourable.
Our recommendation
The sum is decisive for a Moroccan counter business. 72,000 MAD over five years for a till whose payment function does not work here, against 40,000 MAD paid once for a till built for this market.
The reading changes if you are already with Shopify for your online shop. In that case POS Lite is included and unified stock has real value; that is the subject of our article on selling online and in store.
And if you want the price known in advance: ours are public, in dirhams, with no exchange exposure and no renewal. Lite free, Go 9,000 MAD, Pro 40,000 MAD.
