Cafe POS in Morocco: Shopify POS, Square or BelloPOS?

Square is the global benchmark for cafes, and its payment service does not exist here. What that leaves usable, and the solution that keeps up with eight in the morning.

By BelloCommerce

·

Let us start with an honest acknowledgement: in the world of coffee, Square is the benchmark. The reader that pairs itself, payment in two seconds, the tip prompt on screen, the receipt by text: it is the most polished experience on the market. And it is exactly what does not exist in Morocco, because their payment service does not cover the country.

The short answer

  • Square is the best cafe product on the global market, and its card acceptance stops at eight countries, Morocco not among them.
  • Shopify POS Lite is free with a $39 a month subscription, which is expensive for a simple coffee counter.
  • What stays usable: the catalogue, stock tracking and sales log, taking cash or using your bank’s terminal.
  • A cafe needs speed, not features. The number of taps to sell a coffee decides more than any feature list.
  • BelloPOS Lite is free for life, offline, with customer balances for regulars and receipts in Arabic.

The solutions compared

Two international benchmarks and a local till, for a trade where everything turns on ten seconds at the counter. The ranking is clearer here than elsewhere, and it has nothing to do with the products’ quality.

Shopify POS

Shopify POS logo

Shopify’s till, in two tiers: POS Lite, included with any Shopify subscription, and POS Pro, an add-on billed per retail location. Its reason to exist is to make online stock and in-store stock one single stock.

Square Point of Sale

Square Point of Sale

Square’s till (Block, Inc.), very widespread in North America and a few European countries. The base software is free because the company earns from processing card payments. Its pricing page now shows a single ladder: Basic, Plus, Premium and Square Pro on request.

BelloPOS

BelloPOS logo

Our Windows till software, built in Morocco. It runs 100% offline: no sale depends on the connection. The interface and the receipts exist in French, Arabic and English. Three tiers: Lite free for life, Go and Pro bought once, never subscribed to.

What it really costs over five years

A cafe generally needs only one till, which makes the cost gap particularly visible.

The solutionOver 1 yearOver 3 yearsOver 5 years
BelloPOS Lite (free for life)0 MAD0 MAD0 MAD
Shopify Basic alone ($39/month), POS Lite included4,399 MAD13,198 MAD21,996 MAD

The amounts above are worked out from the public prices recorded on 27 July 2026, with VAT added where a price is quoted excluding tax, and with no commercial discount. For prices in dollars, the rate used: 1 USD = 9.4 MAD, recorded 27 July 2026. Redo the sum with the day’s prices before you decide: they move, and it is your money.

For a simple counter, the conclusion fits in one line: Shopify costs you at least $39 a month, close to 22,000 MAD over five years, when BelloPOS Lite costs zero. And those 22,000 MAD buy an e-commerce platform a neighbourhood cafe generally has no use for.

What Square does better than anyone, and cannot be had here

Let us be precise about what is lost, because it is real. Square’s payment flow is probably the best on the global market: the reader pairs itself, the amount travels from the till to the terminal without anyone retyping it, the tip is prompted on the customer’s screen, the receipt goes by text, and end-of-day reconciliation is automatic. In a cafe taking two hundred payments a day, that is an hour saved daily and zero cash-up discrepancies.

None of that is available in Morocco, and not through any negligence on their part: their model rests entirely on card processing, which depends on country-by-country approvals. Using Square here means keeping the till and losing exactly what made it remarkable. Few cafes will find that trade attractive.

What a cafe actually needs

A cafe does not need a platform, it needs five things, and all of them are available free in Morocco: a sales screen with the ten best-selling drinks on the first page, a clear split between dine-in and takeaway, a receipt that prints properly, a way to keep regulars’ tabs, and a system that does not stop when the connection drops.

That last point deserves pressing, because it is the most underrated. A cafe earns its turnover in three thirty-minute peaks a day. Losing one of those peaks because the line went down costs more than a year of subscription, and it happens more often than anyone admits.

On Square’s pricing

A note on Square’s prices, because we will not quote a figure we have not verified. Their pricing page now shows a single ladder, Basic, Plus, Premium and Square Pro, the last on request. The amounts themselves are computed by the browser and do not appear in the page’s code: we could not record them on 27 July 2026. Figures circulate in third-party articles; we will not repeat them. Check their page directly, the link is at the end of this article. In any case, the question of price comes after the question of availability, and that is the next point.

How to choose: the twenty-minute method

The general method, tightened to the counter’s ten seconds.

  • Count your real needs before you look at a single price. How many tills, how many users, do you invoice businesses, do you need stock, do you take delivery orders. Five answers, and half the offers rule themselves out. Our guide to choosing a till works through this questionnaire.
  • Test the checkout, not the demo. Ask to ring up ten items, one return and one split payment, yourself, and time it. A well-rehearsed demo tells you nothing about what your cashier will face on a Saturday.
  • Pull the internet cable and try to sell. That one test splits the whole market in two, and it takes thirty seconds. We go through it in detail in our offline or cloud POS comparison.
  • Ask for an export of your own data before you pay anything. Products, customers, sales, in a file you can open. If the answer is vague, you already know how this ends.
  • Add up five years, not one month. A subscription is compared with a one-off purchase over the time you will actually use it.
  • Check that the receipt prints correctly in Arabic before you commit. On a thermal printer that is not a given, and it takes a minute to see.
  • Ask who answers the phone on a Saturday at 8pm, and in which language. That is exactly when a till breaks.
  • Count the taps to sell an americano, then multiply by your daily coffee count.
  • Have the counter person test it, not you.

What each solution does better

Shopify POS

Single stock between the online shop and the store. That is a real advantage and it deserves saying plainly: if you already sell on Shopify, a sale at the counter decrements the website’s stock within the second, and the reverse too. Catalogue, customers, orders and reports sit in one place. No assembly of two tools does that as cleanly as a product designed as one, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Square Point of Sale

The payment experience and the hardware, where the service exists. Square probably has the most polished card checkout on the market: a reader that pairs itself, a payment in two seconds, a receipt sent by text, readable fees and no contract. The software is free and genuinely complete. It is an excellent product, and its business model is precisely the reason it does not cover Morocco.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Paying $39 a month for an e-commerce platform to run a coffee counter.
  • Buying a Square or Shopify reader without checking country coverage. It will not work.
  • Choosing a cloud till in a trade that earns in three thirty-minute peaks.
  • Neglecting regulars’ tabs, very common in Morocco and rarely handled well.
  • Forgetting to test Arabic printing on the counter’s thermal printer.

Frequently asked questions

Does Square work in a cafe in Morocco?

The app can be installed, but card acceptance cannot: Square limits card acceptance to eight countries and states it does not support processing elsewhere. In a cafe, where cards are heavily used, that removes most of the product’s point.

Is Shopify POS suitable for a cafe?

Technically yes, but POS Lite assumes a Shopify subscription from $39 a month, about 4,400 MAD a year, for an e-commerce platform a neighbourhood cafe generally has no use for. It only makes sense if you also sell online.

Which free till for a cafe in Morocco?

BelloPOS Lite, free for life and entirely offline, with customer balances for regulars’ tabs and Arabic receipt printing. Aronium Lite is also free and has takeaway and named orders plugins, but no Moroccan module.

How do you handle dine-in and takeaway?

With BelloPOS the distinction is handled in the Pro tier’s restaurant module. With Shopify, through product variants or POS Pro. With Square it is built in natively, where their restaurant offer is available.

What happens during an internet outage?

On a cloud till the degraded mode is limited, which is risky in the middle of the morning peak. BelloPOS runs 100% offline: the peak runs normally, whatever happens to the line.

Can you keep a regular customer’s tab?

Yes, with BelloPOS’s customer balances, included from the free Lite tier: you record what is owed and clear it when the customer pays. It is a very common practice in Morocco and it deserves tracking in the till.

Our recommendation

Square is an excellent product, and it is not made for you here. That is not a judgement on their quality, it is a question of their payment service’s availability, which is their whole point.

Shopify POS only makes sense if you already sell online with them, for instance selling your coffee beans. Otherwise, $39 a month to run a counter is a poor trade.

For a Moroccan cafe, start with BelloPOS Lite: free for life, offline, with regulars’ tabs and Arabic receipts. You will move to Pro the day you manage terrace tables, and not before.
