Square probably has the best restaurant till in the Western world, and Shopify POS is excellent once your online shop is already with them. Neither takes a bank card in a Moroccan restaurant. Here is what that changes in practice on a Friday night, and what is still usable.

The short answer
- Neither Shopify Payments nor Square processes cards in Morocco. In a restaurant, where card payments weigh heavily, that is the starting point, not a detail.
- You can use them for the till and stock, take cash and use your bank’s terminal for cards. It works, but you key it in twice.
- Table service needs functions they charge dearly for: POS Pro at $89 a month per location, on top of the subscription.
- BelloPOS Pro includes the restaurant module: tables, kitchen display, networked terminals, for 40,000 MAD paid once.
- And above all, service continues when the line drops. In a full restaurant, that is the most profitable function of all.
The solutions compared
Two international benchmarks and a local program. This comparison is not trying to diminish the first two, which are excellent products, but to say precisely what they can and cannot do in a Moroccan restaurant.
Shopify POS
Shopify’s till, in two tiers: POS Lite, included with any Shopify subscription, and POS Pro, an add-on billed per retail location. Its reason to exist is to make online stock and in-store stock one single stock.
Square Point of Sale
Square’s till (Block, Inc.), very widespread in North America and a few European countries. The base software is free because the company earns from processing card payments. Its pricing page now shows a single ladder: Basic, Plus, Premium and Square Pro on request.
BelloPOS
Our Windows till software, built in Morocco. It runs 100% offline: no sale depends on the connection. The interface and the receipts exist in French, Arabic and English. Three tiers: Lite free for life, Go and Pro bought once, never subscribed to.
The comparison, criterion by criterion
The first four criteria are common to this whole group. The ones after are those of table service.
| The criterion | Shopify POS | Square Point of Sale | BelloPOS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Card acceptance in Morocco | No. Shopify Payments does not cover Morocco and their readers depend on it. | No. Square limits card acceptance to eight countries. | Through your bank’s terminal, like most Moroccan businesses. |
| Pricing model | Shopify subscription from $39/month, POS Pro + $89/month per location. | Free app, tier prices not readable in their page’s code. | Lite free for life, Go 9,000 MAD, Pro 40,000 MAD, once. |
| Works offline | Limited degraded mode, the solution is built for the cloud. | Limited degraded mode. | Yes, 100% offline. |
| Receipt languages | International orientation, Arabic depends on your configuration. | Same point. | French, Arabic, English, built in and tested. |
| Table management | Available with POS Pro, at $89/month per location. | Built into their restaurant offer, where the service exists. | Included in BelloPOS Pro’s restaurant module. |
| Kitchen display | Through third-party apps from their app store. | Built into their restaurant ecosystem. | Included in Pro, on a screen you supply. |
| Split bills | Yes, with POS Pro. | Yes, one of their strengths. | Yes, in the restaurant module. |
| Tips and service charge | Supported, but tied to the payment module, unavailable here. | Excellent, but tied to their payment service. | Handled in the till, independently of the payment method. |
| Annual cost for a restaurant | About 14,400 MAD a year with Basic and POS Pro. | Not calculable: amounts not published in the page’s code. | 40,000 MAD once for Pro. |
| Who it suits here | A restaurant that also sells online on Shopify and accepts handling cards separately. | A restaurant located in one of the eight covered countries. | A Moroccan restaurant that wants a service that never stops. |
What it really costs over five years
The cost of an equipped restaurant, in dirhams and over five years, with a Moroccan reference to place the orders of magnitude.
| The solution | Over 1 year | Over 3 years | Over 5 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Basic + POS Pro ($39 + $89/month per location) | 14,438 MAD | 43,315 MAD | 72,192 MAD |
| BelloPOS Pro (40,000 MAD, once) | 40,000 MAD | 40,000 MAD | 40,000 MAD |
| BelloPOS Go (9,000 MAD, once) | 9,000 MAD | 9,000 MAD | 9,000 MAD |
| Caisse Manager, till + stock + mobile (410 MAD/month) | 4,920 MAD | 14,760 MAD | 24,600 MAD |
The amounts above are worked out from the public prices recorded on 27 July 2026, with VAT added where a price is quoted excluding tax, and with no commercial discount. For prices in dollars, the rate used: 1 USD = 9.4 MAD, recorded 27 July 2026. Redo the sum with the day’s prices before you decide: they move, and it is your money.
A restaurant taking Shopify Basic plus POS Pro would pay about 72,000 MAD over five years, for a till whose payment side does not work here. Against that, BelloPOS Pro at 40,000 MAD paid once includes the full restaurant module. The gap is not arguable, and it grows every additional year.
A Friday night, with and without integrated cards
Here is what the absence of card processing changes in practice, in a real service rather than in a table.
- Table 6 asks for the bill and pays by card. With a till integrated into payments, the waiter sends the amount to the terminal in one gesture. Here, they type the amount on the bank’s terminal, wait, then come back and record the payment in the till. Two entries, two chances of error, at every table.
- A bill split three ways, two of them by card. The same problem, multiplied. It is the moment of the evening when double entry costs the most, and when cash-up discrepancies appear.
- Cashing up. The bank terminal’s total and the till’s total have to match. Without integration, that is checked by hand every evening. Plenty of Moroccan restaurants already do it and know how long it takes.
- The 9pm internet outage. On a cloud till, service stops. On an offline till, nobody notices. It is the most visible difference to your customers, and the only one they will remember.

What they do better, and it remains true
Neither Shopify Payments nor Square processes card payments in Morocco. Shopify lists 46 countries and regions for Shopify Payments, Morocco is not among them, and Shopify’s card readers depend on that service. Square, for its part, writes that card acceptance is available “in the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, France and Spain” and that it does not support payment processing outside those countries. In practice you can use these tills as a catalogue and a stock tracker, take cash and go through a separate bank terminal, but the brand’s own payment hardware will not work in your shop (checked 27 July 2026).
That said, let us not throw away what is good. Square’s food service ergonomics are a benchmark, their handling of tips and split bills is exemplary, and their hardware is the most polished on the market. Shopify POS, for its part, is unbeatable if your restaurant also sells online with them: click and collect, gift cards, one customer file. Those qualities are real. They are simply not available in full here.
The test to run before signing, in a restaurant
Whatever till you are considering, run this sequence during the demo: open three tables, key in twelve items, transfer a table, split a bill in two with one card payment, cancel a dish already sent to the kitchen, then cut the network and try one more sale. Note how many gestures it takes to record a card payment made on a separate terminal: that is the gesture you will repeat most often in Morocco.
How to choose: the twenty-minute method
The general method, with the points specific to service.
- Count your real needs before you look at a single price. How many tills, how many users, do you invoice businesses, do you need stock, do you take delivery orders. Five answers, and half the offers rule themselves out. Our guide to choosing a till works through this questionnaire.
- Test the checkout, not the demo. Ask to ring up ten items, one return and one split payment, yourself, and time it. A well-rehearsed demo tells you nothing about what your cashier will face on a Saturday.
- Pull the internet cable and try to sell. That one test splits the whole market in two, and it takes thirty seconds. We go through it in detail in our offline or cloud POS comparison.
- Ask for an export of your own data before you pay anything. Products, customers, sales, in a file you can open. If the answer is vague, you already know how this ends.
- Add up five years, not one month. A subscription is compared with a one-off purchase over the time you will actually use it.
- Check that the receipt prints correctly in Arabic before you commit. On a thermal printer that is not a given, and it takes a minute to see.
- Ask who answers the phone on a Saturday at 8pm, and in which language. That is exactly when a till breaks.
- Count the gestures to record a card payment taken on a separate terminal. You will do it a hundred times an evening.
- Check the end-of-service reconciliation between the terminal’s total and the till’s.
What each solution does better
Shopify POS
Single stock between the online shop and the store. That is a real advantage and it deserves saying plainly: if you already sell on Shopify, a sale at the counter decrements the website’s stock within the second, and the reverse too. Catalogue, customers, orders and reports sit in one place. No assembly of two tools does that as cleanly as a product designed as one, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Square Point of Sale
The payment experience and the hardware, where the service exists. Square probably has the most polished card checkout on the market: a reader that pairs itself, a payment in two seconds, a receipt sent by text, readable fees and no contract. The software is free and genuinely complete. It is an excellent product, and its business model is precisely the reason it does not cover Morocco.
Mistakes to avoid
- Choosing a till for its payment integration without checking it is available in Morocco.
- Buying the brand’s card reader. It will not work without the associated payment service.
- Underestimating double entry. Over a year of service it is dozens of hours and cash-up errors.
- Not testing a network outage in a trade where service cannot stop.
- Counting POS Pro in the singular when you have two sites: it is billed per location.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use Shopify POS in a restaurant in Morocco?
You can use it as a till, catalogue and stock tracker, but not to take a card: Shopify Payments does not cover Morocco and their readers depend on it. You will therefore take cash or use your bank’s terminal, with double entry on every card payment.
Does Square work in a Moroccan restaurant?
The app can be installed, but card processing cannot: Square states card acceptance is available in eight countries and that they do not support processing elsewhere. In a restaurant, where cards are heavily used, that is a serious limitation.
Which restaurant till works offline in Morocco?
BelloPOS runs 100% offline, and its Pro tier includes the restaurant module with table management, kitchen display and networked terminals. Service continues exactly as before when the connection drops.
What does Shopify POS Pro cost for a restaurant?
$89 a month per location, on top of a Shopify subscription from $39 a month, which is about 14,400 MAD a year and close to 72,000 MAD over five years at the rate of 27 July 2026.
Is there a kitchen display with Shopify or Square?
With Shopify it goes through third-party apps from their app store. Square offers a complete restaurant ecosystem where the service exists. BelloPOS Pro includes the kitchen display at no extra cost, on a screen you supply.
What if my restaurant also sells online?
That is the one case where Shopify becomes very relevant again, since stock and customers are shared. Our article on selling online and in store covers exactly that situation, with the BelloPOS plus BelloCommerce alternative.
Our recommendation
For a Moroccan restaurant, neither Shopify POS nor Square is a sensible buy, not because they are bad, but because the function that made their reputation is not available here and you would be paying for it without using it.
BelloPOS Pro is the local answer: restaurant module, kitchen display, table management, networked terminals, Arabic printing, support in Darija, and a service that continues when the connection drops. 40,000 MAD paid once.
If your budget does not stretch yet, start with BelloPOS Lite, free for life, managing tables on paper for a few months. Plenty of Moroccan restaurants work this way and move to Pro when the volume justifies it.
